The ocean is critical to sustaining life on our planet, but it is changing in ways that we do not fully comprehend. This conference will explore the science behind our understanding of the ocean, the impacts of human activities on ocean health, and the ways we can best manage the ocean to ensure its protection.

14:45-15:00: Welcome addresses

15:00-17:00: “The Hard and Social Science of the Ocean”, plenary session chaired by Francoise Gaill (Ocean & Climate Platform’s Scientific Committee)

Speakers: Paul Falkowski (Rutgers University), Lisa Levin (Scripps Institution of Oceanography), Charles Sheppard (University of Warwick), Marjan van den Belt (Massey University)

17:00-17:30: Coffee break

17:30-19:00: “How to Manage the Ocean”, roundtable discussion led by Brice Lalonde (former French Minister of the Environment)

Speakers: Lucien Chabason (Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales), Francoise Gaill (Ocean & Climate Platform/CNRS), Philippe Cury (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement), Luis Valdés (UNESCO), Dan Laffoley (International Union for Conservation of Nature)

19:00-20:00: Closing remarks, followed by a cocktail reception
