Summary

The AdriAdapt platform has been developed as part of the EU Interreg Italy-Croatia Adriadapt project, which seeks to support the building of local and regional resilience by developing the knowledgebase required to identify and plan appropriate climate change adaptation options. The platform has been prepared to serve as a source of knowledge and inspiration for the successful and smart transformation of coastal cities and regions of the Adriatic into resilient places with thriving communities, minimum environmental footprint, and a healthy environment for present and future generations. It contains: integrated adaptation planning tools; more than 40 adaptation options; 11 case studies across the region; regional climatic information; thematic guidelines, handbooks and guides; 50 videos, including training and conferences.

Actions

AdriAdapt knowledge platform on adaptation to climate change for the Adriatic coast has been prepared to serve as a source of knowledge and inspiration for the successful and smart transformation of coastal cities and regions of the Adriatic into resilient places with thriving communities, minimum environmental footprint, and a healthy environment for present and future generations.

The contents of this platform have been prepared by PAP/RAC and CMCC, with the support of IUAV. ARPAE, DHMZ and CMCC have produced high-resolution climate projections with detailed information on climate parameters for the Adriatic regions. DOOR takes credentials for the structure of the platform. The knowledge platform has been tested during the implementation phase on Adriadapt’s pilot sites (Cities of Cesena, Cervia, Udine, Vodice and Šibenik-Knin County).

The platform contains the following elements:

  • integrated adaptation planning tool (step-by-step guide);
  • more than 40 adaptation options divided into three categories (societal, green and grey);
  • 11 case studies from Croatia, Italy, Slovenia, France and Greece (from coastal plans to managed retreat);
  • climatic information for the region;
  • several thematic guidelines, handbooks and guides on adaptation, including financing adaptation and enhancing coastal resilience;
  • more than 50 different videos such as short capsules (5–10 minutes), full trainings and conferences held during the project

All materials are available in English, Italian and Croatian.

Coastal Resilience Handbook for the Adriatic (here)

The handbook provides support for the reduction of the potential negative consequences of climate change by enhancing coastal resilience. It was conceived following the recommendations from the Coastal plan for Šibenik-Knin region in Croatia, and further developed as part of the AdriAdapt project thanks to the collection of recommendations, guidelines and practical advice for coastal areas, cities and settlements along the Adriatic coast.

The handbook offers a systemic and interdisciplinary review of the challenges that decision-makers will face in the years to come and of the potential solutions capable of reducing costs and bringing multiple benefits. It is the result of a multidisciplinary effort from experts in integrated coastal zone management, climatology, spatial, urban and landscape planning, sociology, geomorphology, coastal engineering, hydrology, marine biology, forestry, fire protection management, environmental economics and oceanography.

Review and sectoral recommendations are provided on the following topics: the Adriatic coast, Climate change in the Adriatic coastal zone, Resilience, Societal adaptation measures, Green adaptation measures, Gray adaptation measures.

Outcomes

Although developed for the Adriatic region, the platform has been visited by users from over 130 countries in the first 6 months of its running. This attests the platform’s high-quality content as well as the global dimension of coastal challenges raised by climate change.

Climate change adaptation, as well as climate action, require collective efforts. As the need for experience and knowledge sharing grows, tools such as the AdriAdapt platform which delivers information in all languages and for different social and cultural settings are all the more relevant.

The knowledge platform has been designed based on stakeholders’ perceptions of climate change in the field and has been tested during the implementation phase on Adriadapt’s pilot projects (Cities of Cesena, Cervia, Udine, Vodice and Šibenik-Knin County).
