Summary

The California Coastal Adaptation Inventory provides information about the status and trends of sea level rise adaptation planning process and outcomes along California’s outer coast, with over 70 examples from coastal cities and counties.

Action

The Ocean & Coastal Policy Center (OCPC) provides research, advising and education resources to promote integrated coastal management through sustainable and equitable coastal and climate adaptation, protection of public trust coastal resources, and international knowledge sharing and collaboration.

The California Coastal Adaptation Inventory evaluates the status and trends of sea level rise adaptation planning process and outcomes along the outer coast of California. Through the examination of administrative, legal, policy, planning and technical materials, such as Local Coastal Programs, and with over 70 examples from across the state, the inventory includes information about vulnerability assessment, adaptation strategy development, and local coastal planning. The inventory aims to support coastal adaptation planning, decisions, and actions for actors involved in adaptation to sea level rise in California. It provides resources for addressing various coastal resilience goals of the California Ocean Protection Council, including ensuring that California’s coast is resilient to sea level rise in 2050, 2100 and beyond.

Outcomes

  • Completion, maintenance, and expansion of the inventory of coastal adaptation activity in California.
  • Evaluation of the status and trends of this activity
  • Recommendations to state and local practitioners addressing sea level rise adaptation will be produced.
