Summary

The Dôme implements Living Labs, i.e. working sessions and workshops bringing together a wide range of experts, economic stakeholders, representatives of local authorities and civil society around scientific and social issues related to the evolution of their territories. As part of the TURFU Festival held in Caen in 2020, workshops were organised around the theme of sea-level rise. These Living Labs sought to enhance the territory’s vulnerability diagnosis, leading to a better appropriation by the population of the issues and the risks and the formulation of adaptation proposals on several time scales (2030, 2050 and 2100).

Actions

The Living Labs are co-design workshops for civil society, bringing together a wide range of experts, economic actors and local authority representatives.

These workshops intend to raise awareness among the population on the issues and impacts of rising sea levels by involving them in the design, development of and decisions about adaptation solutions. In addition, these Living Labs strive to encourage direct dialogue between researchers, economic stakeholders and communities. They also promote scientific and technical mediation for local populations on these complex subjects.

Outcomes

As part of the TURFU Festival held in Caen in 2020, workshops were organised on the theme of sea-level rise. These Living Labs sought to enhance the territory’s vulnerability diagnosis, leading to a better appropriation by the population of the issues and the risks and the formulation of adaptation proposals on several time scales (2030, 2050 and 2100). In total, nearly 70 representatives of civil society engaged with these workshops.

Following this festival, new research teams and project leaders inspired by this method and approach have reached out.

The inclusion of cultural actors who have the passion and expertise to mobilise and engage with the population is pivotal to the project implementation.

To date, the Living Lab project has been abandoned by authorities in favour of a more traditional approach. The reluctance of elected officials is the main obstacle to furthering the project.
