Summary

Led by the Municipality of Saint Paul, in partnership with the National Forestry Office and the Centre d’Etude et de Découverte des Tortues Marines (CEDTM), as part of the call for projects “Nature-based solutions for resilient coastal territories” of the Ministry of Ecological and Solidary Transition, the project focuses on the recapture of the natural environment in a small area of the Bay of Saint Paul.

In this highly artificialized and transformed area, the objective is to promote a natural coastal area better adapted to present and future marine hazards. This initiative integrates gentle coastal management techniques (e.g. reprofiling, planting, invasive vegetation control) and relies on the resilience of natural vegetation. Thus, it contributes to restoring the beach’s morphodynamic balance while permitting suitable physical conditions for turtles to lay eggs.

Actions

The rehabilitation of Cambaie beach is based on the implementation of soft management techniques: reprofiling, planting, and mitigation of invasive species. The reprofiling of the beach (soft protection solution) facilitates the colonization of the beach by the indigenous liana Ipomea pes-caprae.

This rehabilitation also relies on the resilience of native vegetation. The establishment of suitable littoral vegetation contributes to the maintenance of the beach, as does the restructuring of the beach via reprofiling.

Outcomes

To date, the beach has been effectively recolonised by the liana Ipomea pes-caprae. The effects of the operation on the beach profile will be assessed during and at the end of the operation.
