Summary

The initiative has two components: scientific shows and books intended for the general public, whose objectives are to disseminate knowledge on climate change, marine submersion, coastal diversity, coastal erosion and adaptation through nature-based solutions. It is a dialogue between science, art and comedy, to overcome the psychological barriers linked to the changes and the anxiety caused by climate change. (1) Science shows: “Hey… the sea is rising” and “The sea strikes back” deal with climate change, marine submersion and marshes adaptation to rising sea levels, but also with the diversity of coastlines, coastal erosion and the adaptation provided by Nature-based solutions. (2) Two books for the general public supplement these two shows. They combine comedy, art and science, going in-depth and offering the scientific references of all the papers used.

Actions

The University of La Rochelle and the Regional Natural Park of the Marais Poitevin are implementing two main activities: scientific shows and book editions intended for the general public. The purpose of this initiative is to disseminate knowledge on climate change, marine submersion, coastal diversity, coastal erosion and adaptation through nature-based solutions. It is a dialogue between science, art and comedy, to overcome the psychological barriers linked to the changes and the anxiety caused by climate change.

(1) The Science shows:

Neither conferences, nor science classes, nor even comedy shows, but rather “Science shows”, they target the general public, but also spatial planning managers, politicians and coastal users. The first show: “Hey … The sea is rising!”, deals with climate change, marine submersion and marshes adaptation to rising sea levels. The second show: “The sea strikes back”, after a brief reminder on climate change, is about the diversity of coastlines, coastal erosion and the adaptation provided by Nature-based solutions.

(2) Two general public books supplement these shows. With identical titles: “Hey … the sea is rising!” and “The sea strikes back”, they allow through comedy, art and science, to go in-depth and present the scientific references mobilized for the writing.

In total, between 400 and 900 people attended each representation of the shows while the book “Hey… the sea is rising!” sold at 2000 copies.

Outcomes

With several performances and a number ranging from 400 to 900 spectators at each performance, the science shows have been a real success. The HLMM show has been performed several times during 2019, notably at the request of local authorities. If the Covid-19 pandemic caused the cancellation of a significant number of shows during the year 2020, the show is again scheduled in 2022 on the French territory.

The book HLMM has sold more than 2000 copies.

A dialogue between sciences, art and comedy is core to the project’s success.

The shows could not be performed simultaneously in advantaged and disadvantaged neighborhoods.
