Summary

SCORE aims to increase climate resilience in European coastal cities. The project tackles specific challenges related to sea levels, coastal erosion and extreme weather events using an integrated solution of smart technologies and nature-based solutions. It is a project financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The project is being implemented in 10 pilot areas called Coastal City Living Labs (CCLLs), including the Dublin CCLL in Ireland. This CCLL focuses on Dún Laoghaire, located on Dublin Bay (Irish Sea), home to 218,000 residents and spanning 19 km of coastline. Coastal flooding is a significant issue here: one of the two main public transport train lines, the ‘DART’, runs along the coast and is frequently flooded during storms, jeopardizing the transportation system. Additionally, flooding of the coastal water pumping stations and the water treatment plant leads to poor water quality, posing risks to local swimmers and the natural environment.

Actions

  • Further testing and enhancement of two existing Ecosystem-Based Adaptations (EBAs) in Dún Laoghaire—Booterstown Marsh and Dalkey Island saltmarsh—will be conducted by SCORE through integration with smart technologies. These areas, located on the south shore of Dublin Bay, are designated Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for roosting tern species and are under ongoing management by local government authorities.
  • Additionally, landscape planning for public parks is currently being reviewed by local government authorities
