Summary

SCORE aims to increase climate resilience in European coastal cities. The project tackles specific challenges related to sea levels, coastal erosion and extreme weather events using an integrated solution of smart technologies and nature-based solutions. It is a project financed by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.

The project is being implemented in 10 pilot areas called Coastal City Living Labs (CCLLs), including the Sligo CCLL in Ireland. Coastal flooding and erosion pose a serious challenge to tourism activity relying on healthy beach ecosystems, as well as to many archaeological sites located on the coast in Sligo. Several heritage venues have been closed due to flooding, while some archaeological sites have been washed away and lost forever. This CCLL focuses on three areas: Streedagh Beach, Dunmoran Strand and Enniscrone.

Actions

  • Establishment of vegetated buffer areas in dune systems as hybrid NBS
  • Testing buffer zones with several vegetated areas
  • Testing several coastal protection bioengineering solutions
