From an international agreement to concrete actions
Ocean at the heart of COP23
The Presidency of Fiji at the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) represents a strong symbol considering the vulnerability of insular and costal states in the face climate change and rising sea-levels; and reflecting on the growing awareness of the importance of ocean in regulating climate change. Thanks to a joint work among several organisations, including the Ocean and Climate Platform (OCP), the COP 23 will dedicate for the third year a day for ocean action.
Providing an overview of ocean-based solutions for climate change
Although the links between ocean and climate are becoming better defined, the solutions to adapt to and mitigate climate change suffer from a lack of visibility. To provide an overview of ocean-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation within the framework of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, OCIA is launching its first Report on “Measuring Progress on Ocean and Climate Initiatives: An Action-Oriented Report”. The report features a foreword from Mr. Peter Thomson, UN Special Envoy for the Ocean and presents a comprehensive analysis of actions led by international initiatives to move from political momentum to implementation of action through multi-stakeholder partnerships.
Building on the momentum of COP23 to foster ocean and climate action
This OCIA report and its conclusions will be presented during the OCP’s side event « From Science to Action, the Ocean and Climate Initiatives Alliance », which will take place on 10 November from 11.30 am to 1.00 pm at the French Pavilion, in the Bonn Zone of COP23. Mr Peter Thomson will provide the opening remarks, highlighting the ocean action strategy to drive SDG14 from here to 2020. A high-level discussion on the place of the ocean, its science and actions within climate dynamics – with the participation of Hon.Anote Tong, Former President of Kiribati, together with several panelists from the scientific community, decision-makers and civil society.
About OCIA
To support action and facilitate the emergency of new initiatives, the Ocean & Climate Platform launched the Ocean & Climate Initiatives Alliance (OCIA) in February 2017. OCIA was designed to consolidate and coordinate the concrete actions initiated linking ocean and climate. To strengthen international and multi-stakeholder cooperation around ocean-based solutions, OCIA is fully integrated into the Global Climate Action Agenda (GCAA) objectives, notably to ensure a perdurable connection between the Convention and the many voluntary and collaborative actions developed around the world.
