An Ocean of Possibilities: Townhall

Co-organised by: Ocean & Climate Platform, World Economy Forum (Friends of Ocean Action) and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy
The Ocean of Possibilities project—led by the Ocean & Climate Platform (OCP), Friends of Ocean Action, and the CNRS, with the support of Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy—was conducted from 2023 to 2025, with the goal to develop a collective civil society vision for a sustainable and regenerative ocean future. During this townhall, participants involved in the initiative will share compelling visions of desirable futures for the ocean and innovative transformative actions to achieve them, with discussions spanning four key themes: science, nature and people, governance, and finance. Participants will also cover how the outcomes of the initiative could feed into post-2030 agenda discussions.

From Science to Shoreline: Bridging Knowledge, Policy, and Action for Coastal Resilience (Session T10 -18)

Under Theme 10, “Vibrant Science to Inform and Support Ocean Action,” Victor Brun, Science Lead at the OCP, will present the ambitions of the Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Coalition to bridge the science-to-policy gap in coastal adaptation, addressing the critical question: “How can scientific knowledge be placed at the heart of local decision-making in response to ocean change?”.

OCEAN RISE & COASTAL RESILIENCE SUMMIT

Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Summit

Co-organised by: Ocean & Climate Platform, City of Nice, Global Centre for Climate Mobility with the support of the Government of France and Costa Rica
The Ocean Rise & Coastal Resilience Summit will convene mayors, governors, and local government leaders alongside key stakeholders from science, finance, and civil society to address the urgent challenges posed by rising sea levels and oceanic change. This landmark event will also mark the official launch of the Coalition for Coastal Cities and Regions, chaired by Christian Estrosi and hosted by the GCCM. Backed by over 20 global organisations and networks, the Coalition will aim to accelerate adaptation efforts by fostering collaboration between coastal cities and regions and key actors in this critical transition. More than 200 coastal cities and regions have already confirmed their participation. Throughout the day, they will exchange insights and strategies during nine thematic sessions covering science, finance and insurance, port infrastructure, social equity, and nature-based or hybrid adaptation solutions.

The Future Is Now: Let's Dive into an Ocean of Possibilities

On World Ocean Day, the Ocean & Climate Platform and The Varda Group are organising the high-level event “The Future is Now: Let’s Dive into an Ocean of Possibilities”. Looking towards 2030, this high-level event will bring together diverse voices, bold visions, and a shared commitment to taking transformative action to safeguard the ocean. Grounded in two compelling initiatives – Let’s Be Nice to the Ocean and An Ocean of Possibilities, the session will spark fresh thinking and reimagine our relationship with the ocean. It will provide a space for civil society to ignite imagination and mobilise meaningful action for the future of the ocean.

Making Waves From Nice to Belém: Accelerating Ocean-Climate Action

This high-level event will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Paris Agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It will take stock of a decade of ocean-climate progress and explore ways to accelerate meaningful action, particularly through means of implementation.

Enhancing Blue Carbon Partnerships: A China-EU Collaboration for Climate Action

Organised by: Ocean & Climate Platform
Co-hosted with: BlueSeeds, China Institute for Marine Affairs, China Oceanic Development Foundation, French Development Agency, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, International Cooperation Department of the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), the National Marine Hazard Mitigation Service (NMHMS) of MNR, Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA).
This event will convene scientists, experts, and policymakers to explore the critical role of blue carbon ecosystems in achieving climate, biodiversity and other global goals. It will center on a bilateral cooperation project between the European Union and China, focusing on blue carbon ecosystems. The first session will present the key insights and next steps from the project, building on a deeper understanding of its progress and impact. The second session will expand the discussion, fostering dialogue on ways and means international cooperation and partnerships can scale up blue carbon action and drive meaningful change.

Cards on the Table: Opening Up Difficult Conversations on the Ocean-Climate Nexus

Cards on the Table is an open discussion format tackling some of the most complex and unresolved questions at the ocean–climate nexus—ranging from governance gaps to scientific uncertainty and the limits of current solutions. Organised in partnership with the Ocean Reporting Network of the Pulitzer Center, the event brings together a rotating panel of experts from science, policy, civil society, and the private sector to reflect on a series of carefully framed questions. Without aiming for consensus, it fosters honest and respectful dialogue, creating space for diverse perspectives and capturing the multifaceted nature of these challenges.
