Summary

In September 2017, Hurricane Irma hit Barbuda, causing severe destruction among critical habitats of the Codrington Lagoon. To support the recovery of the Codrington Lagoon, Team Antigua Atlantic Rowers (TAAR) provided a grant to Marine Ecosystems Protected Area (MEPA) Trust for the restoration of the mangrove. The project seeks to protect the people of Barbuda through mangrove replanting that would serve as a buffer against storm surge and provide a suite of ecosystem services above and below the water.

Actions

The Marine Ecosystems Protected Area (MEPA) Trust was awarded with a grant for the restoration of the mangrove. The project seeks to protect the people of Barbuda through mangrove replanting that would serve as a buffer against storm surge and provide a suite of ecosystem services above and below the water. Before the replanting, an assessment is conducted to identify the best suited species of mangrove for the area.

Outcomes

The Project is still ongoing. However, mangroves that were lost due to the impact of hurricane Irma, have been replanted and are now growing well.

Synergies and partnerships have been significantly important in this project.

The funds are limited. The project mainly relies on volunteering work of community members and consultants.
